TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – After the billboard Joko Widodo or Jokowi as “The Most Embarrassing UGM Alumnus” invites public attention. Now, the billboard has changed to call Jokowi the “Most Proud UGM Alumnus.”
The change from the word “embarrassing” to “proud” was approved by Japet Moryo Doclas Hutabarat, a 2019 Faculty of Forestry student who is now an alumnus and has joined Kagama.
According to Japet, the label “Alumnus UGM Most Embarrassing” to Jokowi does not represent UGM students and alumni. This is because the statement from the Chairman of BEM KM UGM, Gielbran M. Noor, is a personal opinion that did not go through a deliberative agreement. Gielbran’s opinion was also not agreed with by some of the students from BEM UGM.
Changing the label to “Most Proud UGM Alumnus” is indeed worthy of being given to Jokowi.
“I am sure that with all his (Jokowi’s) achievements and hard work, this is the thing that can be most validated, especially the work program in the infrastructure sector which is felt by all people, including in Eastern Indonesia,” said Japet to Tempo.co on December 18, 2023.

During his tenure as president, Jokowi not only prioritized development, but welfare and competitiveness for every human resource. Jokowi is also carrying out a work program in the form of mobilizing MSMEs in remote villages and implementing one price fuel oil (BBM). This work program can be proof that Jokowi is the “Most Proud UGM Alumni.”
Apart from that, Jokowi’s performance as president is also another proof that he deserves to be given the label “Most Proud UGM Alumni.” For example, Jokowi was able to handle the Covid-19 pandemic quickly and hold international sports matches in Indonesia. Due to his performance, Japet believes that many UGM students are proud of Jokowi as an alumnus who became President of Indonesia.
Furthermore, Japet revealed that Jokowi has also implemented UGM values. Jokowi is the only popular president who often goes to 3T (underdeveloped, frontier and remote) areas. He also became the president of Indonesia who resolved the problems in Papua by going directly.
“On my statement, the word ‘proud’ is much better than ‘shameful’. Because, I don’t accept any indicators that the ‘shameful’ giver brings to Jokowi,” said Japet.
In contrast to Japet, Rahmadanti, a 2020 Faculty of Philosophy student, remains firm on the label “Most Embarrassing UGM Alumnus” for Jokowi. The label “embarrassing” cannot quickly change to “proud”. The reason is, heading into the 2024 election, Jokowi has violated moral, legal and constitutional boundaries. Ethics, which are the basic values for UGM alumni, are not implemented.
“Ethics is a legal basis, but Jokowi cannot be considered president and an alumnus of UGM because he is ignorant of political and state ethics. To quote Ronald Dworkin, ‘Moral principle is the foundation of law‘,” said Rahma on December 18, 2023.
According to Rahma, Jokowi cannot differentiate between institutional politics and personal politics. In the world of politics, public officials are required to serve without exception for Indonesia. However, Jokowi uses politics for certain groups. Jokowi perpetuates regulations that harm Indonesia’s integration for one-sided interests. Jokowi’s actions often do not reflect UGM’s values of fairness and objectivity, such as appointing his son as vice presidential candidate.
“As a parent, Jokowi prays for Gibran to become vice presidential candidate, he should be more neutral by applying UGM values in the form of being objective,” said Rahma.
Jokowi’s use of power to influence the 2024 election contestation is also an example of a clear violation of the constitution. Jokowi’s ethical values as president and UGM alumnus must be re-established to implement the constitution transparently so that he can make his alma mater proud.
“Currently, I still agree with the label ‘Most Embarrassing UGM Alumni’ for Jokowi, especially every step towards the 2024 Election,” he said.
