Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has announced that the development of public transportation in Jakarta is 30 years behind schedule. Despite new transportation projects being launched, the president said that the number is still insufficient. As a result, there have been significant traffic jams causing people to choose their own transport instead of mass transport. The lack of transportation infrastructure has resulted in major congestion not only in Jakarta, but also in other major cities, including Bandung, Medan, Surabaya, Semarang and Makassar in Sulawesi. In response, Jokowi has launched the development of the Trans Sulawesi Railway, following the Makassar City-Parepare route in South Sulawesi, to provide a more affordable and efficient transportation option for citizens.
