Joinville vs. Magnus: Joinville Repeats Victory to Secure Spot in Futsal League Final

Joinville repeated the score of 4-3, beat Magnus again and is in the final of the National Futsal League. In a game with two comebacks, Joinville held off pressure from the home team and was efficient in the second leg of the semifinal on Friday night at Arena Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo.

The São Paulo team had more possession of the ball, created more chances, but was hampered by their own lack of aim. The visitors opened the scoring with Roni, but took the turn with goals from Pepita, Rodrigo and Charuto, which made it 3-1.

Joinville reacted and sought a draw with goals from Henrique and Rafinha, the latter with less than a minute and a half to go. 3-3 was already enough, as Joinville won the first game 4-3. Sorocaba put in a goalkeeper, but made a mistake and Henrique scored the visitors’ fourth with 18 seconds remaining.

The Futsal League final will be played in a single game in the city of Toledo, Paraná, on December 17th, a Sunday. Joinville will face the winner of Atlântico Erechim and Cascavel, who will play the second match next Monday.

The team from São Paulo remains to compete in the State Championship, a tournament in which the team was playing with the under-20 team. The Sorocabans will play the semi-final return against Pinda at home next Tuesday, at 8pm.

This was the fourth knockout clash between Magnus and JEC in 2023 alone. JEC came out on top in the first two in March, in the semi-final of the Supercup Gramado and in the final of the futsal Supercup. In June, the São Paulo team turned things around in the Copa do Brasil and won both games in the round of 16.

The game

Needing to win to force extra time, Magnus went up and had the first big chance of the match. Lucas Gomes took a strong shot from outside the area and goalkeeper Willian took it away with his feet.

Joinville responded and scared us three times in a row. The first with Willian, by far, who stopped in Françoar. In the second, Fernando released a long shot and hit the post. Finally, it was Renatinho’s turn to force the opposing goalkeeper to make a difficult effort.

Before the clock reached the seventh minute, the atmosphere heated up between the teams. Genaro elbowed Rafinha and sparked a revolt from the Joinville bench that attacked Sorocaba’s number 16. Players on both sides went toe-to-toe, before Genaro received a yellow card. Other athletes were also warned for getting involved in the chaos.

With the ball rolling again, the São Paulo team began to attack more frequently, but they lacked aim.

With less than eight minutes left in the first half, Joinville opened the scoring with a quick counterattack. Fernando dribbled past Lucas Gomes still in the defense field, carried the ball and passed it to Roni, who dominated and touched Françoar’s exit to make it 1-0.

Magnus increased the pressure and almost tied it with 3:45 left. Rodrigo Capita received it from Dieguinho at the entrance to the area and dropped a bomb. Goalkeeper Willian saved incredibly with his fingertips and the ball still hit the post neatly.

Soon after, with 1:50 left in the initial stage, the home team beat the “almost” and left the score equal. In an efficient exchange of passes, Ricardinho made a beautiful heel pass and found Pepita, who received it and shot hard into the corner, with no chance for Willian.

With both teams within the limit of five fouls committed, any new infraction would be a direct free kick. And that’s what happened 26 seconds after Pepita’s goal, when Ernani, from Joinville, committed a foul in the attacking field. Coach Cassiano Klein used his challenge to contest the call, but the referee upheld the decision after seeing the image on the video support (VS).

With the foul called, top scorer Rodrigo took the ball and shot under Willian to turn the score to Magnus: 2 to 1.

Soon after, there was another challenge at VS, but from the Sorocaban side. Coach Ricardinho wanted the referee to mark Joinville’s seventh foul, but the referee again maintained the court marking, giving final figures for the first half.

On the return of the complementary stage, Joinville’s first big chance. Dieguinho lost the ball to João Silveira who, face to face with the goalkeeper, shot wide of the crossbar.

Soon after, with just over two minutes on the clock, Magnus punished Joinville and scored the third goal. Lucas Gomes was brave, won the contest from below and served Cigar. The number 9 showed coolness and shot low to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Santa Catarina team didn’t give up and a minute later they put the difference back to just one goal. Fernando shot with a pointer and Françoar palmed it at the feet of Henrique, who dominated the area and took a light touch to take it away from the goalkeeper and score a beautiful goal.

After that, the game became more truncated, with Sorocaba keeping the ball more, controlling and involving the opponent. Opportunities on both sides became rarer.

That was until 8:37, when Ernesto came face to face with Willian, tried to dribble him, but the goalkeeper didn’t fall for the feint and avoided the Sorocaban goal well.

Soon after, the home team had two great chances in the same move. Lucas Gomes shot twice in a row, but stopped in Willian’s defense.

At that point in the match, Magnus had ample control, but was unable to score the fourth goal. Joinville responded and had its opportunities in long-distance shots.

Two minutes from the end, Joinville placed Renatinho as goalkeeper and 36 seconds later it had an effect. After the mid-range shot, goalkeeper Françoar rebounded and Rafinha caught the ball in the area to finish high and make it 3-3. The draw was enough for Joinville to qualify for the final.

At a disadvantage in the confrontation, Magnus replaced Pepita as goalkeeper and went for it all or nothing. With 18 seconds left before the clock reached zero, the São Paulo team made a mistake and Henrique shot from his own court to seal Joinville’s victory and qualification for the final of the Futsal League.
