Joint Statement Warns Against Military Intervention in Niger: A Declaration of War on Burkina Faso and Mali

The authorities in Ouagadougou and Bamako warned in a joint statement that any military intervention in Niger to restore elected President Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown by a coup, to power would be tantamount to “a declaration of war on Burkina Faso and Mali.”

What did the statement say:

On Sunday, the leaders of the “Sidiao” set the military group in Niger a week’s time for a “full return to constitutional order,” announcing that they would not rule out “resorting to force” in the event of a lack of response.

Also, the regional organization decided to “suspend all commercial and financial exchanges” between member states and Niger.

Other financial penalties were imposed, including “freezing the assets of military officials involved in the coup attempt.”

In a separate statement, the Guinean authorities emanating from the coup announced their “disapproval of the sanctions imposed by Cediao, including military intervention,” and noted that they “decided not to apply these sanctions, which they consider illegal and inhuman.” Conakry urged the Economic Community of Western States Africa to “reconsider its position”.
