“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the war of aggression against Ukraine launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The attack on a sovereign state is a clear breach of international law and a massive violation of the principles of the UN Charter. It is an expression of ruthless power politics. There is no reason and no justification for this.
After decades of peace on the European continent, military aggression against an independent country marks a turning point that forces us to redefine many positions. It required – and impressively produced – a united and determined response from Germany, Europe and its allies. We support the measures that have been taken. This also includes the sanctions against Russia, which are aimed at those responsible for politics and expressly not at the Russian people, although they will also suffer the effects. These measures will require sacrifices from all of us. But the price of not stopping military aggression would be far greater.
Our full solidarity goes to the people of Ukraine. These have become the victims of a brutal attack, they suffer directly from the inhuman consequences of the war. They are currently not only bravely defending their country, but also our European peace order and the associated values of self-determination, human rights and freedom. The real threat posed by Putin’s regime is people’s longing for freedom and self-determination. But it cannot be suppressed permanently with violence.
We support all efforts to help end this war as soon as possible to prevent further bloodshed at this hour. Germany and Europe must show solidarity to take in people fleeing war and provide humanitarian aid in order to reduce human suffering. Wherever we can, we will also help.”
