The Biel municipal council has decided to join the “Mayors for Peace” association. The association is a loose global association of cities that have dedicated themselves to peace politics, especially nuclear disarmament. The organization was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the then Mayor of Hiroshima, Takeshi Araki. mt
The Biel municipal council has approved a loan of CHF 102,625 for the construction of the near-natural playground and recreation area on the school grounds of the Sahligut primary school. The playground was designed in a participatory design process with the children and teachers of the school. The new square will be inaugurated with a party before the summer holidays. The project is co-financed by the Roger Federer Foundation via Radix Swiss Health Foundation and private donations. mt
The municipal council of Twann-Tüscherz has decided to transfer Swiss Solidarity a contribution of CHF 10,000 to alleviate the refugee crisis. Refugees from the Ukraine have already arrived in Twann and have received accommodation at the invitation of private individuals. The municipality is in the process of setting up a working group headed by municipal councilor Christian Brügger, which will deal with the refugee situation on site. She clarifies what the community can and should do for the privately admitted refugees. mt
In summer, the association Schlosspark Theater Nidau stages the open-air theater “Uswandere”. The story takes place in the decades before the Jura water correction, which was characterized by the hardship and misery of the population throughout Seeland. The city of Nidau is supporting the project with 5,000 francs and waiving the payment of services amounting to 17,000 francs. mt
