“Join as a Donor on Bone Marrow Donation Day to Give the Gift of Life”

April 1 is the National Bone Marrow Donation Day, in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the INCUCAI National Registry of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Donors (CPH). In adherence to this date, will take place throughout the month blood drives in various locations, to promote the donation of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HCPS) or bone marrow.

The initiative is promoted by the Ministry of Health, through the Cordoba Ablation and Implant Coordinating Entity (Ecodaic) and with the collaboration of other public and private institutions.

On this occasion, the Cordovan entity presents a guide for people with an indication for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation, better known as bone marrow, which is already available for download via this link.

As officially reported, since the commissioning of the National Registry of Donors of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells (CPH) in the year 2003more than 1,300 Argentine men and women who did not have a compatible donor in their family group were able to access a bone marrow transplant with donors from registries around the world.

Reasons to donate bone marrow

Every year, hundreds of people are diagnosed with hematological diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, lymphoma, myeloma, metabolic errors or immunological deficiencies and may require a HPC transplantpopularly known as bone marrow transplant.

Donation is an act that can save the lives of patients with more than 70 diseases.

However, only 25 to 30 percent of these people have a chance of finding a matched donor in your family group. The rest must resort to a unrelated donorthrough the National Registry, which together with that of other countries make up a global network of voluntary donors.

Marcial Angós, director of Ecodaichighlighted the importance of donating CPH: “It is necessary for the community to understand the importance of giving life to life. You only need to be healthy, be between 18 and 40 years old, weigh more than 50 kilos, and it is not necessary to show up fasting,” he said.

Likewise, the official stated that, for this year, the goal is to increase the number of registrations by 75 percent in relation to the year 2021, which implies add 25,000 donors throughout the country.

How can you donate?

Regarding the procedure to donate, Angós explained that “When expressing the will, the person signs an informed consent and a small unit sample of bloodwhose genetic data will be available in the National Registry of Donors. In this way, the registration is confirmed and if it is compatible with a recipient, Incucai will contact the donor to make the donation effective.

Currently there more than 300,000 Argentine donors, of which 30,000 registered in Córdoba and are part of the more than 32 million donors of the Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide Network.

Every time a person requires a transplant, the search is carried out among all registered donors throughout the world, increasing the possibility of finding a compatible one.
