Johnson’s successor will be known after the MPs’ summer vacation

The official nomination of the candidates will take place on Tuesday. To be able to run, the applicant must receive the support of at least 20 conservative MPs.

The first vote for Tory MPs will take place on Wednesday. To qualify for the next vote, a candidate must receive the support of at least 30 deputies.

It is expected that the second vote of the deputies will take place on Thursday, and the following ones – next week.

Deputies’ votes will continue until the two strongest candidates are determined, for whom all party members will be able to vote by mail, choosing the new party leader.

The result of this final vote was announced on September 5, when the deputies will resume their work in the parliament after the summer holidays.

It has already been reported that 11 Tory politicians have announced their intention to run for the position of Conservative Party leader.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is seen as the favorite, but Rishi Sunak, whose resignation as finance minister sparked a wave of government resignations that ultimately led to Johnson’s resignation, is also a strong contender.

Former Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt, who in 2019 came second to Johnson in the party leader election, has also put forward his candidacy.

Former health minister Sajid Javid, new finance minister Nadim Zahavi, trade policy minister Penny Mordont and transport minister Grant Shapps have also entered the race.

The chairman of the parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Tom Tugendeth, the Crown’s justice adviser, Suela Braverman, the relatively little-known former equality minister, Kemi Bedenock, and the deputy parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rehman Chishti, have also submitted their candidacies.

Johnson, who became prime minister three years ago, was forced to resign on July 7 amid a series of scandals involving, among other things, breaches of the quarantine regime at Downing Street, a wasteful renovation of his official residence and the appointment of a candidate accused of misconduct to high office.
