British Prime Minister Boris Johnson drew criticism by joking that the closure of coal mines in Scotland by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has accelerated Britain’s fight against climate change. About it informs The Guardian on Friday 6 August.
Visiting the Morey East wind farm on the northeast coast of Scotland, Johnson answered a journalist’s question about the need for a clear timetable for the cessation of oil production and gas exploration.
“We understand the importance of the oil and gas industry in the northeast of Scotland. Signed contracts cannot be broken off just like that. But we need to switch (to alternative energy – ed.) As soon as possible,” Johnson said.
“Look what we have already done. During my lifetime, we gave up coal. Thanks to Margaret Thatcher, who closed so many coal mines across the country, we had a good start, and now we are all quickly abandoning coal together,” added the prime minister …
Note that the way Thatcher handled the decline of the coal industry in the 1980s is still seen as one of the biggest failures of her tenure. This is especially the case for Scotland and the north of England, which have suffered the most.
In turn, the first Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, said that Johnson’s comment was “rude and deeply insensitive” to the miners.
“Scotland’s life and communities were devastated by Thatcher’s destruction of the coal industry (which had nothing to do with caring for the planet),” Sturgeon wrote on Twitter.
Also, Labor leader Kir Starmer criticized Johnson’s words.
“Boris Johnson’s infamous praise for the closure of Margaret Thatcher’s coal mines … shows how much he has lost touch with the workers,” the politician said.
