Johnson passes parliamentary conservative vote of no confidence / Day

More than two years after winning the parliamentary election, Johnson has once again demonstrated his ability to get out of political trouble to stay in power.

However, Johnson’s position was significantly weakened by the scandals caused by the news of the Downing Street party during the Covid-19 quarantine regime. The news meant that Johnson had become the first British Prime Minister to break the law while in office.

Johnson was supported by 211 Conservatives but 148 did not. In order to pass this vote, he needed the support of a Conservative majority of 180 out of 359.

If Johnson lost his vote of no confidence, he would have to resign as Conservative leader and prime minister. As he has passed this vote, he will not be allowed to hold such a vote of no confidence for a whole year.

Former British Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Teresa Maye of the Conservative Party had resigned after a vote of no confidence with a slight majority because they considered their positions to be irretrievably undermined.
