Johnson & Johnson vaccines may be lost in Santa Cruz due to expiration date

Vaccines from the renowned US laboratory Johnson & Johnson can spoil in Santa Cruz if they are not applied until this November 18. According to official data from health authorities, 14,000 doses are available to supply in 36 immunization centers.

“The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is being applied, which expires on the 18th of this month. We have invited the entire population, since this vaccine is applicable to all people, ”said Jorge Quiroz, coordinator of the Urban Health Network of the capital of Santa Cruz.

Quiroz said that before they were not applied as reinforcements (to avoid losses) because there was no order from the Ministry of Health. “The Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) sent the letters explaining that due to short expiration it was requested to be able to apply as a third dose, but we had no answers,” he justified.

He added that to apply the doses, a correct use guideline must be followed, which must be authorized from the National Vaccination Plan., which in this case there was not; However, they are applicable to people who need to travel abroad, the same ones who must carry out a prior procedure to access the vaccines.

According to Quiroz, the short expiration period of this vaccine is due to the thawed batch being received, so the time of use of the doses was shortened. “If we had had the correct cold chain, this vaccine expires on January 22, but the freezing process was not respected,” he said.
