Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceutical and beauty products giant, has announced a plan to settle a civil lawsuit alleging that talc is carcinogenic. J&J announces it is willing to pay about $6.5 billion. The proposed plan includes a period of three months in which applicants will be notified of its existence. It will be confirmed if 75% accept it. The group says that the plaintiffs’ lawyers who collaborated on the development “support it”.

“This plan is the result of our concurrent resolution strategy announced in October,” Erik Haas, vice president of legal affairs at J&J, said in a statement. “Since that date, the agency has been working with attorneys representing the majority of claimants to resolve this dispute, which we expect with this plan,” he said. According to the announcement, J&J has agreed to pay approximately $6.475 billion over twenty-five years for claims related to ovarian problems (99.75% of current claims) Other disorders include mesothelioma, nicknamed “asbestos cancer”, and are treated separately.
