Johnson & Johnson will pay sanctions of US$230 million equivalent to Rp. 3.3 trillion (exchange rate of Rp. 14,425) related to painkillers, opioids that have caused hundreds of people to die from overdoses.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said the money would be used for education, prevention and treatment of opioids. Johnson & Johnson will pay the fund over nine years.

“Johnson & Johnson helped light this fire. Although no amount of money will compensate the thousands who lost their lives or became addicted to opioids across the state. These funds will be used to prevent future destruction,” he said. CNN, Monday (28/6/2021).

The sanctions also aim to stop Johnson & Johnson from producing or selling opioids, or promoting opioids or opioid-related products. A spokesman for Johnson & Johnson said the company had decided to stop production and sales of the painkiller last year.

In a statement, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) said the monetary sanction referred to as a settlement was not an acknowledgment of responsibility or guilt. His party said this was to show the company’s commitment in providing certainty for the parties involved and important assistance for people in need.
