Johnson anticipates that Ukraine will continue to need support for years

London, June 19 (EFE).- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned this Sunday in an article in “The Sunday Times” that the war in Ukraine will be long and Western leaders must assume that this country will need support for years to continue being a viable State.

“We must arm ourselves with courage for a long war,” says the British head of government, who last week visited kyiv for the second time since the invasion ordered by the Kremlin began.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin “is resorting to a campaign of attrition and brutally trying to crush Ukraine,” the UK and its allies “must respond by ensuring that Ukraine has the strategic resilience to survive,” he said.

“Time is a vital factor,” Johnson continues. “Everything will depend on whether Ukraine can strengthen its ability to defend its soil faster than Russia can renew its ability to attack.”

To do this, Ukraine must “receive weapons, equipment, ammunition and training faster than the invader,” said the prime minister, who on Friday announced a training program with the capacity to train up to 10,000 soldiers every 120 days.

He also stressed the need to continue offering funds to kyiv so that it can keep the state administration running and begin reconstruction “whenever possible.”

“That will require ongoing funding and technical assistance, which we should plan to sustain for years,” he added.

In his article, Johnson also highlights that it is necessary to find ways to dispose of the 25 million tons of cereals that accumulate in Ukrainian silos without being able to leave the country.

The United Kingdom “supports the efforts of the United Nations to negotiate a safe corridor for exports by sea. Ukrainian ports are vital for global food supply and we will continue to offer the necessary weapons to defend them,” he said. EFE
