Johnson: Accelerate booster campaign due to omicron | Abroad

“It is now clear that two doses of the vaccine are simply not enough to provide the level of protection needed,” Johnson said. “But the good news is that our scientists are confident that we can increase that level of protection again with a third dose, a booster shot.”

According to Johnson, the acceleration of the booster program is necessary because of the rise of the omicron variant, which he even compared in his speech to “a tidal wave” that is on the way. In the UK 1,239 new infections with the Omikron variant were confirmed on Sunday, almost doubling the 633 infections reported on Saturday.

Self test

Earlier on Sunday, the British government announced new measures to prevent the spread of the corona virus. For example, from Tuesday, people who have been partially or fully vaccinated and who have had contact with someone who is infected will have to do a self-test for seven days.

Shortly after Johnson’s announcement, the British health service’s NHS website crashed as people rushed to book booster shots, The Independent newspaper reported. “The NHS website is currently experiencing technical difficulties. We are working to resolve these issues. Thank you for your patience,” said a statement on the website.
