Johnny Marr rejects calls for a Smiths reunion following Oasis’ return.
Ahead of Oasis’ 2025 comeback, one hopeful fan tweeted about the possibility of The Smiths returning.
“If Oasis can do it, so can The Smiths (I’m delirious),” one fan wrote on his X account to which the former Smiths guitarist responded with a photo of right-wing British MP Nigel Farage, whom Morrissey suggested as a good candidate for Prime Minister a decade ago (via The Independent).
At the time, Farage was heavily criticised by England’s artistic community for his role in bringing about the controversial Brexit.
Following the UK’s exit from the European Union, Morrissey described Brexit as “magnificent”, a statement which led Marr to further distance himself from his former bandmate.
Without a caption on the photo, Marr’s post makes clear that Morrissey’s political views pose a major conflict in a hypothetical Smiths reunion.
Let’s remember that in 1987, The Smiths dissolved after tension between Johnny Marr and Morrissey, after 7 years of career and both have not been together since then.
