Johnny Depp’s lawyers told a British Appeals Court that the actor’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, did not donate the $ 7 million she received in her divorce settlement to charity as she had claimed, part of the arguments with which they seek to annul a ruling that the actor assaulted her during their marriage.
The Hollywood star seeks to appeal the Supreme Court decision last November, when he lost his defamation lawsuit against The Sun newspaper for labeling him a “battering husband” in an article. Depp lost the case in July after a three-week trial.
The judge ruled that Depp, 57, assaulted Heard, 34, a dozen times and led her to fear for her life three times.
Depp’s lawyers argued that the actor did not receive a fair trial. Neither Depp nor Heard were present at the hearing.
Attorney Andrew Caldecott said in written statements that Heard’s allegations that he donated the $ 7 million from his divorce in full to two organizations was a “calculated and manipulative lie” that gave a “considerable boost to his credibility as a person” and “Tipped the scales against Mr. Depp from the start.”
The judge found that 12 of the 14 instances of domestic violence cited had occurred and said that was enough to rule against Depp in his defamation suit against the newspaper.
Depp acknowledged having drug problems, but accused Heard of fabricating allegations of abuse and insisted that he was not a violent person, “much less with women.”
His lawyers maintained that the allegations caused “serious damage” to the actor’s reputation and “much anguish and embarrassment.”
