Seki analyzes why this makes sense given Caine’s unique fighting style and his lack of eyesight, but takes issue with the following parts of the scene: Cain and Shimazu’s sword movements lack intention.. “Their footwork in that scene is to close the distance and avoid being noticed by the opponent as much as possible. (Cain) is holding the sword like this because he is blind. Because they can’t see, they turn their faces so they can rely on their ears. He has a sword in front of him to react if anything happens.
“The swordsmanship that Sensei Sanada uses is a type of joint jujutsu, or batto jujutsu. Iaijutsu or battojutsu is a technique used after drawing the katana from its sheath (in a single, fluid motion). When you momentarily realize that you are at a disadvantage and want to move away from your opponent or create space for an attack, kicking your opponent is one way to do so.
“In this scene, you don’t see him wanting to kill his enemy. He doesn’t try to cut down his opponents efficiently. In this scene they are lightly clashing their katanas. It would be better to break the rhythm so that you can surprise your opponent. This shows how to avoid someone coming from behind by using the axis of your foot to turn and dodge. This is more of an iaijutsu approach.

In terms of realism, I would give it a 7 out of 10.
Because it’s a continual clash of swords that’s clearly pointless. There is rarely any intention to outsmart, cut, stab, or kill the opponent.”
