In our new series “Blaulichtreport History” about the worst crimes in history, we will be presenting true crime stories that have kept the world on tenterhooks. Today: The story of “John Wayne Gacy”:

Many people get scared when they see the film “It” by author Stephen King. But there was also a clown in the real world who spread fear and terror: John Wayne Gacy, a seemingly successful businessman and popular member of the community, turned out to be one of the cruelest serial killers in American history. Under the guise of a friendly neighbor and committed party member, he committed a real horror in Chicago in the 1970s.

Gacy, who performed as a clown at children’s parties, used his likable facade to attract young men and boys. His victims, often from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, were tortured, raped and finally murdered in his house. He hid the bodies in his house, under the crawl space and near the Des Plaines River.

In December 1978, 15-year-old Robert Piest disappeared without a trace. The investigation led the police to Gacy, whose house was then searched. The cruel truth subsequently came to light: Gacy confessed to 33 murders.

His trial was one of the most famous in American history. Gacy was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection in 1994.
