John Travolta looks back on iconic dance with Princess Diana: “Like a fairytale” | Celebrities

CelebritiesThe photos have gone around the world: John Travolta (67), who floats across the dance floor with the British Princess Diana in 1985. An iconic moment for the actor too, although he was not at all prepared. He tells Esquire Mexico that. He also talks about the death of his wife Kelly Preston: “Grieving is very personal.”

“I didn’t think they would ask me to dance with her,” says John Travolta. He was allowed to dance with the princess at a dinner party at the White House in 1985. “But I did get that honor. That’s why I thought,” There must be a reason for this, so I better give it my all. ‘ “That meant leading the dance well, but also making sure we had fun. That was the easy part. But greeting Diana the right way, being confident and asking her to dance were more difficult assignments.”

Fairy tale

Travolta therefore calls the event a ‘fairytale’. “Think about the setting. We’re in the White House, it’s midnight. It really seems like a dream. I go up to her, touch her elbow and invite her to dance. She spins around and shows me an enchanting smile – a little bit sad – and accepts my invitation. And there we were, dancing together as if it were a fairytale. “The singer will not soon forget their dance.” Who would have thought that something like this could ever happen? I was smart enough to remember it. It was a very special, magical moment. ”

In the interview, Travolta also tells about the death of his wife Kelly Preston last year. “I have learned that grieving is very personal. That is different for everyone. The most important thing you can do to help someone who is grieving is to give them the space to do it their way, and not burden them with your own grief. Suppose you are at a funeral and you are very sad. And then someone approaches you who has even more grief. Then you will not have room to come to your own grief. At least, that’s how I experienced it ”, it sounds.

Children

“You don’t want to know how many people approached me about being so sad. I just didn’t know what to do with that, because I already had so much to process myself ”, Travolta continues. “Of course it was not badly intended, but in the end you are comforting others. That is why I think it is important to have a place where I can be alone with my grief, without anyone intervening. ”

Travolta also explains that he now mainly focuses on his two children, Ella (21) and Ben (10). “I will secure their future, help them do what they want to do with their lives. I now do that at Ella: I teach her about working in the film industry. Ben is barely ten years old. I want to help him grow, because he still has his whole life ahead of him. ”
