John Romero released his new Doom episode, Sigil 2, in honor of the game’s 30th anniversary

30 years ago, on December 10, 1993, id Software released a free-to-play version of its first-person shooter Doom. It’s safe to say that the gaming industry, and perhaps the entire world, was never the same again as the game became a huge hit and helped launch an entire genre of games.

Today, on Doom’s 30th anniversary, John Romero, one of the creators of the original game when he was at id, released a new nine-level episode for that game, Sigil 2, which he also created. It is also a sequel to Sigil, another Doom episode he created and released in 2019.

Breaking through the pentagram of invulnerability in the final moments of SIGIL episode five, you find yourself not on a victorious path back to save the Earth, but in Baphomet’s cunning trap, catapulted into a new, grotesque realm of merciless torment, endless hordes of demons, and an onslaught of heavy metal mayhem!

All but one of Sigil 2’s nine new levels include a multiplayer deathmatch arena. Sigil 2 has new artwork, as well as a new MIDI soundtrack by James Paddock. If you have Doom, you can download a short 2MB episode of Sigil 2 Doom for free from Romero.com.
