John Paul DeJoria: From Homeless to Billionaire Success Story

Jakarta

Achieving success requires struggle and hard work. This is reflected in the life journey of John Paul DeJoria, a former homeless man who is now a billionaire.

This American man is the founder of the hair care company John Paul Mitchell Systems and tequila producer Patrón Spirits Co. Quoted detikcom from Forbes, Wednesday (19/9/2023), his wealth currently reaches US$ 3 billion or around Rp. 45.90 trillion.

Even though this 79 year old man used to live a difficult life. As a child he lived with his mother in Los Angeles. However, DeJoria was forced to be entrusted to foster parents because his mother was no longer able to support him.

When he was over the age limit for a foster child, he lived as a homeless person who had no place to stay. He spends a lot of time in street gangs, often gets fired from his job, and works odd jobs.

DeJoria did not give up on his situation. He does any work to be able to buy food. He sells Christmas cards, encyclopedias, and so on.

“If you just hope for free food, you won’t go anywhere, you’ll just sit around and be bored,” said John Paul DeJoria, quoted by NBC News.

When he sold encyclopedias, he often experienced rejection. Those who sell door to door often face immediate rejection. Even so, he continued to work hard.

Then, DeJoria worked for the hair care product manufacturer Redken and Fermodyl Hair Care. But, both companies fired him.

From there he tried to set up his own company. With his partner Paul Mitchell and capital of US$ 700, he founded John Paul Mitchell Systems in 1980.

Even though they only sell by word of mouth, the public is starting to attract attention to their products. Then, in just two years his company was worth millions of dollars. In fact, now the company is worth billions of dollars.

In 1989, he and his partner Martin Crowley bought shares in Patrón Spirits. Then, in 2018 he sold it to Bacardi for US$ 5.1 billion.
