John McAfee, the notable founder of the antivirus software of the same name, has died in a Spanish prison. According to authorities in the country, 75-year-old McAfee committed suicide.

Spanish media first reported McAfee’s death. His death comes shortly after a Spanish court ruled that he could be extradited to the United States. McAfee was on trial there for tax evasion. He became arrested in October last year by the Spanish authorities following a charge by the US Department of Justice. McAfee allegedly failed to declare millions in revenue to the country’s tax authorities. Everything ‘indicates that McAfee may have committed suicide’, the Spanish authorities say according to Reuters. McAfee was 75 years old.

John McAfee became known for founding McAfee Antivirus. He said goodbye there years ago, but then remained involved in a legal battle over the name. In 2017 he arranged a lawsuit as a result of which he was no longer allowed to associate his name with the security company. In recent years, McAfee has been best known for promoting cryptocurrencies.
