(CNN)– US special climate envoy John Kerry intends to step down from his post by the spring, a source close to Kerry confirmed to the network. CNN.
John Kerry leaves the position after 3 years spent at the head of US climate diplomacy during the Joe Biden administration, after joining the position at the beginning of Biden’s presidency in 2021.
The source close to Kerry said he will attend the World Economic Forum in January and is expected to attend the Munich Security Conference in February.
The 80-year-old former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate led American negotiations at three international climate summits, the last of which was held in Dubai.
Kerry has particularly prioritized restarting international climate talks between the United States and China, and was a key member in negotiating the Sunnylands Agreement in November, a climate agreement between the two countries ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).
Axios first reported that John Kerry will step down and intends to join the Biden campaign, and CNN has reached out to the Biden campaign and the White House for comment.
