An approach that we probably suspect was reserved by the former US Secretary of State John Kerry who gave an exclusive interview to the newspaper “The news” (20-21/4/24).
And this concerns the Greek differences with Turkey regarding (at least) marine areas, marine parks.
As it appears Washington washes its hands of our differences with Turkey and on the occasion of the differences that the USA had with China and Russia, he himself declares that we should settle with Turkey.
Obviously, Ankara does not want to get involved in a Greek-Turkish dispute by downgrading the issue from Geopolitical/International to Greek-Turkish.
The question posed by the reporter Maria Vassiliou posed the question in its geopolitical dimension:
Question: The protection of our seas and oceans goes beyond the environmental dimension, it is also linked to a geopolitical dimension, as we recently saw with Turkey’s reaction to the Greek plan to create marine parks in the Aegean. A geopolitical dimension also exists in relation to the seas and oceans around the Middle East. Are you concerned about such situations and what solutions do you see?
Answer: There is always a geopolitical dimension to ocean protection. It takes diplomacy in addition to their maintenance to pay off. But I will give you an example that shows that geopolitical differences can be overcome or excluded by other issues. No part of the planet or the world’s oceans is changing as fast as the poles in Arctic and Rebel, and it is imperative that we protect these critical areas. As foreign minister, even though we had many differences with her China and the Russia in other matters, we worked together to agree historic new protected areas in the Antarctic Ocean. You can try to find common ground even if there are tensions elsewhere.
The messages are of course “find them” as the Washington it has no purpose either to displease Turkey’s ally – which alone is not isolated – nor to pose any obstacles to the over-armament of the two sides.
