John Heitinga is disappointed on Tuesday after the 2-3 victory over FC Groningen about the number of missed opportunities by Ajax. The trainer thinks that his players should have handled the possibilities better in the remainder of the stopped match and points to Mohammed Kudus, among others.
“Sometimes we have to learn to give someone else a ball,” Heitinga said afterwards ESPN. The coach was referring to an action by Kudus, who should have played a ball to Steven Bergwijn with a 0-1 score from the right side.
“Then you come to 0-2. But now the ball goes to the other side and it becomes 1-1. If we do score the second goal, we will probably walk away,” said Heitinga, who also thinks that Kudus should do more defensive work must perform. The Ghanaian attacker has no “special status” in that respect.
Kudus refused to run along with his direct opponent once in the switch, so that FC Groningen created a great opportunity. “Whether he doesn’t have to walk along? What nonsense”, the trainer responded. “Of course he has to come along.”
Heitinga sees pros and cons at Ajax
Heitinga emphasized that Kudus means a lot to Ajax, as with the second goal against Groningen. The dribbler successfully brought Brian Brobbey into position. “That’s where Kudus’ strength lies. That was a good goal.”
The trainer thinks that FC Groningen also deserves compliments for the game shown in an empty Euroborg. “They have been relegated, but played one of their better matches today. I have seen many good things at Ajax, but also a few lesser ones.”
Because of the victory, Ajax still has a glimmer of hope for a Champions League ticket. The team from Amsterdam is five points behind number two PSV with two games to go. Ajax has a lead of two points on number four AZ.
