John Franklin-Myers – Wikipedia

John Franklin-Myers (Born September 26, 1996 in Los Angeles, California) is an American football player on the position of the defensive end. He currently played for the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL).

Franklin-Myers was born in Los Angeles, California, but moved his family to the Dallas area at a young age.[1] There he attended Greenville High School in Greenville, Texas, where he was active in the football, basketball and track and field teams.[2] In the football team, he was used both in offense as a running back and tight end and in defense as a defensive end.[1] However, he couldn’t prevent his high school team from losing all 40 games in which he played.[3] Franklin-Myers himself, however, was one of the outstanding players of the school and was twice elected Defensive MVP, in addition, he twice reached the First-Team All-District.[2]

After graduating from high school, Franklin-Myers did not receive any scholarship offers from well-known universities, despite his good personal achievements. So he decided to accept a scholarship offer from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.[3] There he was already used regularly in his freshman year and was able to record 11 tackles in 8 games. He was used in a total of 41 games and recorded 130 tackles and 17.5 sacks. He developed into one of the best players in the Conference and was elected to the second-team All-Southland-Conference in 2015 and 2017, and in 2016 even to the first-team All-Southland-Conference.[2] In addition to his good performance as a football player, Franklin-Myers also stood out for his good academic performance, for example he was appointed to the Southland All-Academic Team for all three years and was accepted into the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society in 2018.[1]

In the 2018 NFL draft, Franklin-Myers was selected in the 4th round in 135th place by the Los Angeles Rams.[4] He made his NFL debut on Matchday 1 of the 2018 season in the Rams’ 33-13 win over the Oakland Raiders, in which he recorded 2 tackles.[5] On the 4th game day he succeeded in the 38:31 win against the Minnesota Vikings his first sack in the NFL to quarterback Kirk Cousins. He was also able to force a fumble of cousins ​​in the same move, which his teammate Ndamukong Suh recovered, whereby the Rams won the game.[6] In the 6:15 loss to the Chicago Bears, he managed another sack, this time to quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Overall, Franklin-Myers was used in all 16 games of the Rams regular season, but always as a backup, and was able to record 10 tackles and 2 sacks.[5] He was also voted his team’s Rookie of the Year.[7] Since the Rams won 13 games this season and thus the NFC West, they could qualify for the playoffs. Franklin-Myers made his debut there in a 30:22 win against the Dallas Cowboys in the 2nd round. In the NFC Championship Game against the New Orleans Saints he was used again and recorded 2 tackles.[8] The Rams won the game with 26:23 and could thus qualify for Super Bowl LIII against the New England Patriots. Franklin-Myers was also used in this game. He even managed to sack the Patriots ‘quarterback, Tom Brady, shortly before the end of the 1st quarter and force a fumble, which was recovered by the Patriots’ center, David Andrews. In the end, the Rams lost the game 3:13.[1][8]

In the preparation for the 2019 season, Franklin-Myers could no longer convince and was won on August 31, 2019.[9]

On September 1, 2019, Franklin-Myers was claimed by the New York Jets via the waiver system.[10] However, he completely missed the 2019 season due to an injury.[11] He made his debut for the New York Jets on the 2nd matchday of the 2020 season in the 13:31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, in which he also recorded a tackle.[12] He reached his first sack for the Jets on Matchday 5 in the 10:30 loss to the Arizona Cardinals to Kyler Murray.[13] In the 9:35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Matchday 8, he was the first time in his career starter in an NFL game and was able to record 3 tackles. He also managed to hit Jared Goff in a 23:20 win against his old team, the Los Angeles Rams, on matchday 15.[12]

In the 2021 season he became a regular player for the Jets and was able to convince with good performances.[14] He was able to record a total of 5 tackles in the 0:26 defeat against the Denver Broncos on Matchday 3, his career high to date.[15] On October 7, 2021, he extended his contract with the Jets for four years.[16] In the 21:14 win against the Houston Texans on matchday 12, he even got 2 sacks to quarterback Tyrod Taylor. He was also able to record an interception at the beginning of the first quarter after a throw from Taylor, the first of his career.[11][17]
