John encounters largest ruin ever in HMMIK: ‘Really retarded!’

You would think that John Williams (52) would be used to his program ‘Help, My Husband is a handyman!’, but you have never seen him as surprised as he is in tonight’s episode. He and his DIY team have been called in by Patricia, who has been living in a dangerous, moldy construction site for ten years with her husband Robert and daughter Myrthe. On arrival there appears to be a double (unpleasant) surprise waiting for John.

John doesn’t know if he and his team are able to get the job done.

About ten years ago, Patricia and Robert bought a house in Farmsum in Groningen. Despite all kinds of big plans, hardly anything has been done to the house, only daughter Myrthe’s room is finished, but otherwise they live in a big ruin. John is therefore bouncing with surprise when he comes to take a look. The house is covered in mold from head to toe and there is not even a normal bathroom or toilet.

When John is in a moldy corner (read: shower) of the house, he doesn’t turn around. “Your child showers here too, doesn’t he?” he looks questioningly at Patricia. “Shame on you, you.” When Patricia then responds with a smile that she agrees with him, he is done with it. “I don’t understand why you’re laughing. I only think of one thing and that’s the little one. I think what you’re doing is really retarded.” When he is then led into a room full of toy cars, his ears start to chatter. Patricia explains that this is her husband’s hobby and that there are certainly 40,000 euros worth of cars. John does not understand that Robert does want to spend money on his hobby, but not on the house.

Patricia explains to him that Robert has a warehouse full of old-timers and that actually all his time is spent on them or on his work as a carpenter. To top it all off, she has another surprise for John: the two turn out to have another ruin, where they actually plan to move. The house has been renovated by Robert for about three years and little has been done about it, except that a start has been made on Myrthe’s room. Because John and his team won’t be able to renovate two houses in one go, they decide to tackle the top floor of the second newer house.

Before they can get started, they must first convince Robert. And that turns out not to be so easy: as soon as he catches John in his sights, he doesn’t look happy. And as soon as he hears that Patricia has enlisted the help of the program, he announces that he does not want to participate. “I don’t need help. It’s great that you’re here, but I’d rather go bankrupt than get help. I’m not doing it. End!” In the end, it takes a lot of persuasion from John to convince Robert.

As soon as Robert has started with the DIY team, he has a lot of momentum. Halfway through the episode, he gets an extra boost: an expert comes to their current house to look at the fungus and quickly draws a strong conclusion: he advises Patricia to immediately pack her bags and find another shelter. . Robert then decides to work extra hard in the second house, so that they can move in there as soon as possible. He even manages to get some friends to help him with the ground floor.

When Patricia is allowed to go and see their house at the end of the episode, the bathroom and two bedrooms are finally finished. She can’t believe her eyes: “I’m just shaking, how fat!” she exclaims. When John comes by a week and a half later, Robert appears to have kept his word: there is now a kitchen in it and the living room also looks much better.
