John Collins believes he is worth a maximum contract

Alongside Trae Young, John Collins is the second young cornerstone of the Atlanta Hawks. The Big Man can renew his contract after the end of the season, otherwise he will become a Restricted Free Agent in 2021. Collins now stated that he believes he can get a maximum contract.

“I think you can definitely argue that I’m worth the money,” Collins said to Sarah K. Spencer of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But I also know that there is a business behind it and that we don’t always get exactly what we want.”

With a maximum rookie extension, the Hawks could offer exactly 25 percent of the 2021/22 salary caps. Due to the corona pandemic and the expected slump in sales, it is still completely unclear how high the cap will be.

Collins also postponed that he definitely wanted to stay with the Hawks. The Big Man averaged 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds over the season, but also missed 25 games because he violated the rules of the NBA’s anti-drug program.

“I have the feeling that the team and I have invested a lot. Now we want to reap the rewards.” However, team success has so far failed to materialize, even if Collins’ partner Trae Young was first selected as an all-star. The Hawks only have a record of 20-47, occupying the penultimate place in the Eastern Conference.
