John Coates steps down as chairman of the Australian Olympic Committee

Thomas Bach made the trip in person to Sydney to attend the last congress of his friend John Coates as President of the Australian Olympic Committee. In office for 32 years, Coates, 71, had chosen not to seek a new mandate. His vice-president Ian Chesterman, 63, was elected to succeed him.

Vice-President of the IOC, Coates is one of the most influential leaders of the Olympic movement. Under his tenure, Australia twice won the right to host the Olympic Games: Sydney 2000 and Brisbane 2032.
