Legendary British comedian John Cleese (83) has announced on Twitter that he does not intend to Loretta-scene in the theater adaptation of the satirical film ‘Life of Brian’. In the scene in question, Cleese’s character ridicules a man who identifies as a woman.
Life of Brian dates from 1979 and is a production by the British comedy ensemble Monty Python. The film is set in the Roman province of Judea and is a parody of the life story of Jesus Christ. At the time of its release, there was some commotion because of the many daring statements against the Christian religion, but the film has had the status of a comic classic for decades. However, the controversy is now back, although this time it is not Christian toes that have been stepped on.
“Resistance to reality”
In one of the opening scenes, the character Stan (played by Eric Idle) says that he “wants everyone to call him Loretta from now on”. He also stated that he wants children and that it is within the rights of every man. John Cleese’s character then asked how ‘Loretta’ planned to grow that fruit in his male body. “Are you going to keep the fetus in a box?” he scoffed. The rest of the group agree that despite his biological limitations, Stan has the right to have children “as a symbol of their resistance to oppression.” “Symbolic of his defiance of reality,” Cleese countered.
The actors participating in the theater production have advised Cleese to drop that scene now. “I, of course, have no intention of doing so,” he wrote on Twitter. He also expressed his surprise that such top artists are determined that the production would not get lost in a city like New York. “Won’t Monty Python fans show up because we’re doing a scene that’s made them laugh for 40 years?” Cleese said.
