John Carpenter wants Snake Plissken back for two sequels

John Carpenter, the director of the mythical New-York 1997, admitted that his character Snake Plissken deserves a return in one or two sequels.

Even if since his last film The Ward, John Carpenter prefers to spend his days playing video games and watching NBA games, the legacy of his filmography is still very present in Hollywood. The aura of its cinema worthy of the greatest has indeed given many ideas to studios determined to take over some of the masterpieces of our good old John.

A few years ago, Hollywood was dragging out a crazy project to remake the Adventures of Jack Burton in the Clutches of the Mandarin with the sturdy Dwayne Johnson in place of Kurt Russell, determined to take charge of the project as a producer. And we can say that the reaction of John Carpenter to the announcement was most comical, since he did not at all validate the ambition of the Fox to give a little polish to his adventure film and of kung fu. We haven’t heard too much since then and Dwayne Johnson had to do twice as much weight training to get the pill through.

The Slytherin class

Nevertheless, it’s another film by the John Carpenter-Kurt Russel duo that will interest us, because Total Film took advantage of the release of Halloween Kills next October in which John Carpenter returns as composer and executive producer of David Gordon Green’s film, to interview the 73-year-old filmmaker. And the magazine did not miss the opportunity to ask him questions about a potential return of one of his favorite characters, the iconic Snake Plissken, after a long retirement dating back to 1996:

“He’s a character that Kurt loves passionately. He convinced me to do the sequel. There’s probably a third and maybe even a fourth story to be done around Snake. I don’t know if we’ll ever see them, but I think he deserves it. ”

If that sounds like a good idea on paper, a planned remake of New-York 1997 had been seriously launched by Fox. And if The adventures of an invisible man arguably inspired Leigh Whannell to write Invisible Man, the co-creator of the sagas Saw and Insidious was hired to write the script by Fox to take care of this huge task. However, the takeover of the studio carried out by Disney certainly upset the plans for this remake in which Leigh Whannell imagined Wyatt Russell, taking over the torch from his father Kurt Russell.

While the franchise starring the anti-hero Snake Plissken ended up with two very good feature films, the sequel originally envisioned by John Carpenter was dropped due to the box office failure of Los Angeles 2013. Instead, the director got down to producing the very special Ghosts of Mars, with Ice Cube, Natasha Henstridge and Jason Statham in the cast.

Although John Carpenter doesn’t say much about the aftermath of New-York 1997 and of Los Angeles 2013, it would not be impossible to see Disney restart the machine and thus offer a triumphant return of Snake to the cinema (or on Disney + who knows). And in the best case, Mickey’s ears could remind John Carpenter to finally come out of retirement himself having confessed to wanting to do so. Until then, you can find our folder dedicated to the awesome Los Angeles 2013, but also our unloved on his fake sequel: Ghost of Mars.
