The director knows that a new version of his cult film with Kurt Russell is being studied in Hollywood.
John Carpenter just celebrated its 75th birthday. On this occasion, the filmmaker agreed to retrace his career with Variety. I’m just a fan of the games, I’ve done them all.” Then he reacts to the remake project of New York 1997which has been under study for several years.
For his 75th birthday, John Carpenter looks back on his career: “I am very proud of only one of my films: The Thing”
Robert Rodriguez, for example, was mentioned to stage it in 2017, because Leigh Whannell (Saw, L’Homme invisible) was attached to the project in 2020: he thought of hiring in the main role Wyatt Russellseen in Black Mirror et Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and who is none other than the original film star’s own son, Kurt Russell. Today, they are Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the creators of Scream 5 et 6which are mentioned. “Nobody told me about it.replies Carpenter when asked about it. That’s the thing about my career in Hollywood: nobody ever tells me anything. Have they decided on the cast yet? The journalist explains that no, and that we do not know precisely if it will be a remake strictly speaking or a third story featuring Snake Plissken, to which the director of New York 1997 (1981) et los angeles 2013 (1996), responds: “Okay, great. Last I heard about it, Snake was supposed to be female. But no, I wasn’t aware of the latest developments. Nobody wants me involved, they don’t tell me anything , I’m in complete darkness.”
John Carpenter: ”I would love to find Kurt Russell”
John Carpenter is indeed little involved in the new versions of his works. Officially producer of the new Halloweenby David Gordon Green, he leaves it to the co-writer and director to develop his story. “I thought that after the first film, there would be no more story to tell, he says. Man, I was wrong, huh! They keep bringing him back and coming back again.” However, he agreed to compose the music for the trilogy, along with his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies: “I think I’m happier today, just being a musician. I’m like the guy in charge of changing your carpets. A film needs music? Ok, that’s like saying: ‘I will reupholster your room’, I go there and I take care of it. VSpay me my lunch and go home. I love that.”
David Gordon Green : “Halloween Kills, c’est Halloween 3. Mais aussi Halloween 12”
