Carmack became the first technical director Eye in 2013, and a year later, Zuckerberg’s company bought the studio. And last year, the brand name, which has already become world famous, was changed to Meta* Quest.
The Consulting CTO for VR has previously criticized the company’s approach to AR and VR and its metaverse strategy. Carmack acknowledged that the developers have managed to create something “very similar to what you need”, referring to Quest 2. But it all depends on the low efficiency of the studio and the bureaucracy that consumes everything in the company.
The programmer compared Meta* to a GPU using only 5% of its capacity. In the fall of 2022, it reported that the studio was working on a VR headset that would cost $250 and weigh just 250 grams. Instead, the company announced the Quest Pro for $1,500 and weighing 722 grams.
Carmack admits his high position could help get things off the ground. But instead, he had to make every effort to prevent another leadership “stupidity” from doing harm. So he chose to abandon the fruitless struggle and focus on his own startup.
