In the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s action film, giant robots meet alien monsters again. This time there is a “Star Wars” star. Our film tip

In 2013, Guillermo del Toro took us into the world of “Pacific Rim” for the first time: a fantasy world in which giant robots fist fistfights with gigantic monsters. It’s neither subtle nor deep, but it’s a lot of fun. Six years later, Steven S. DeKnight shot the sequel, del Toro stayed on board as producer. And like its predecessor, “Pacific Rim: Uprising” delivers a lot of monster battles again.
However, the main character Jake Pentecost, played by “Star Wars” star John Boyega, is new in the sequel. Jake is the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), who died fighting the giant Kaiju in the last film. Jake also used to be a pilot of a giant robot, called Jaeger here. But the portal through which the Kaiju came to earth has been closed for ten years. Jake no longer has a purpose in life and gets by with small crimes. It turns out that the monsters have not been defeated as definitively as mankind had hoped. For better or worse, Jake has to climb back into the cockpit. Among other things, he gets help from the young hacker Amara (Cailee Spaeny). And soon the sparks will fly again …
“Pacific Rim: Uprising” runs at 8:15 pm on Vox.
