Johanne Defay won the G-Land Roxy Pro, sixth round of the CT 2022 on the famous left of the island of Java, this Saturday in Indonesia. The Frenchwoman is the first surfer to win there. She is now 3rd in the general classification of the tour.
“It’s surreal and incredible to win this competition,” said Defay. It’s been a long week here in the jungle and the waves at G-Land are so perfect today. It’s really special for me to get this victory, beating Carissa Moore is always very difficult. She came back to me in the last moments of the final and it was very tight. Coming from Reunion, the Indian Ocean is my native ocean. It’s just awesome to be the first woman to win here at G-Land! »
The curse of quarters is overcome
After five consecutive quarter-finals since the start of the year, as many frustrations and an 8th place in the general classification, Johanne Defay struck a (new) big blow this Saturday in Java. Better than passing this delicate milestone this season, she won after knocking down two legends of women’s surfing: seven-time Australian world champion Stephanie Gilmore in the quarterfinals (12.90-12.60); Hawaiian Olympic and world champion Carissa Moore in the final (14.00-13.33); after getting rid of the Australian Bronte Macaulay (13.66-13.33) in half.
Unprecedented triple on the legendary lefts
Defay won narrowly each time but confirmed her qualities on the reef lefts. this success at G-Land is the third on this type of wave which is reminiscent of that of St Leu where the Réunionnaise grew up. After Tavarua (Fiji) in 2016 and Uluwatu (Bali) in 2018, the Frenchwoman offers herself an unprecedented hat-trick on the legendary lefts of the tour. To which she adds her successes in Californian lands at the US Open (2015) and at the Surf Ranch (2021).
This success in Indonesia propelled her to 3rd place in the provisional general classification, still dominated by Carissa Moore ahead of Costa Rican Brisa Hennessy. Eighth before G-Land, Defay has relaunched in the race for the playoffs that only the Top 5 will be able to see within four events. Ah yes, the regular season ends in August on another legendary left: Teahupo’o.
