Van Laarhoven is in very bad condition, according to his lawyers, and medical prison staff cannot sufficiently help him. But a request to interrupt the sentence and be treated in the hospital must be submitted to the prison, the judge says.
Van Laarhoven still has to serve part of his Thai conviction in the Netherlands. The lawyers submitted a request for gratitude for this. They want him to await the decision on that gratuity request at home. But that is not possible, the judge says. In the treaty with Thailand it has been agreed that the sentence must be served in full. This means that Johan van Laarhoven must remain in prison until 28 August 2021.

Van Laarhoven was sentenced in Thailand to 75 years in prison for money laundering. The Thai authorities proceeded to prosecute the Tilburger after the judicial authorities in the Netherlands had submitted a request for legal assistance. The Dutch justice system also suspects him of money laundering and tax fraud and called on the Thai for help because Van Laarhoven lived there.
According to the national ombudsman, the judiciary acted very carelessly in its contacts with Thailand and this also led to the punishment in Thailand.
After a damning report from the ombudsman, Justice Minister Grapperhaus started working for Van Laarhoven. He traveled to Thailand and managed to bring Van Laarhoven to the Netherlands last week to sit out the rest of his sentence. Converted to Dutch penalties, he would have to stay in Vught’s prison until August 2021.
