The KNVB was surprised on Sunday morning by the news that Johan Neeskens died suddenly at the age of 73. In recent days he was active for KNVB WorldCoaches in Algeria where he became unwell. Unfortunately, medical assistance was of no avail.
With Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world loses a legend. His name is forever linked to European club successes with Ajax and Barcelona and two World Cup finals for the Dutch team. Neeskens played 49 international matches and, with his characteristic tackles, sublime insight and iconic penalties, will forever remain one of the leading players that Dutch football has produced. After his more than impressive career as a player, which took him to all kinds of places around the world, he became a club coach, coach of national youth teams and assistant national coach under Frank Rijkaard.

KNVB WorldCoaches
At the KNVB, Johan Neeskens later became the standard bearer of KNVB WorldCoaches. This program, for which he flew all over the world to train coaches in low- and middle-income countries to become coaches and where football provides tools for a better life, was tailor-made for him. Being on the field with other football fans with the idea of achieving something beautiful together, that was Johan Neeskens to the core.
On the field as a player and later off the field as a coach, Johan Neeskens was known for his indomitability. But those who were lucky enough to get to know him better saw, above all, a world citizen and a gentle family man who was proud of his children and grandchildren and who, until the very end, touched others with his love of football.

Attention appropriately
In consultation with UEFA, the Hungarian and German federations, we will pay appropriate attention to Johan’s death during the upcoming international matches. We are also looking at a time when there is an opportunity for supporters to pay him a final greeting.
The KNVB wishes his wife Marlis, his children Christian, Tamara, Bianca and Armand, his grandchildren Djoy and Lovée, relatives and friends a lot of strength in bearing this great loss.
