Sven Mislintat is hit again in a broadcast of Today Inside. Johan Derksen does not understand the vision of Ajax’s director of football affairs, who is described as ‘a buffoon’. With a difficult schedule ahead, Derksen does not rule out that the season for the team from Amsterdam will be over in three games.
“A buffoon is appointed as technical director who has his own vision of unknown players with good statistical data,” says Derksen. “They get a free hand, they can spend millions… And then they have a supervisor, Jan van Halst. No one in the Netherlands takes him seriously, except the supervisory board of Ajax, which includes a hospital director and a few ladies.”
Mislintat brought no fewer than twelve new signings to Amsterdam as technical director this summer. For many Ajax supporters, most purchases did not immediately ring a bell. “Suppose you buy three, but you don’t know in advance whether they are reinforcements. Then you intervene as a club, right?” René van der Gijp agrees. “Then you say: ‘It’s been fun now.’ Of course, you should always buy a few players that you know will be there right away.”
In the eyes of Derksen, the selection of coach Maurice Steijn currently lacks quality. “If you went to Ajax in the past, you could play really good football, otherwise you would not be eligible for that. There are now all players of the level of Willem II playing at Ajax.” The Amsterdam team drew two of the first three competition matches and are therefore in a disappointing eleventh place in the Eredivisie.
Ajax also faces a difficult programme. The competition will resume on Sunday with an away match against FC Twente, after which the group stage of the Europa League will kick off against Olympique Marseille. Finally, Feyenoord will visit the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Sunday, September 24. “Maurice Steijn has to flog a dead horse because of this, it is one big mismanagement there. I think a lot will become clear after FC Twente-out. Then the season could be over after three games,” said Derksen.
