Skating team Jumbo-Visma has broken open and extended the contract of Joep Wennemars. The twenty-year-old sprint talent is now fixed with the team of coach Jac Orie until mid-2025.
“I am very happy that we can continue together for two years,” says Wennemars in a statement from Jumbo-Visma. “From the moment I came here, it was already clear that Jac and I are working on something bigger than just today. We are working together towards the Olympic Games in Milan (2026, ed.) And in my opinion that includes a contract extension .”
The son of two-time world champion Erben Wennemars came over from TalentNED last year and looks back on a successful debut season at Jumbo-Visma. He qualified well for the World Cup competitions in the 1,000 meters and in November won a silver World Cup medal behind China’s Ning Zhongyan.
Orie is happy that Wennemars will stay longer with his team. “He is a talented boy who is progressing very fast and is open to anything. The fact that he has already been on the World Cup podium this season shows that he is on the right track,” says Orie.
Wennemars is fourth on Saturday at the NK reserve in the 1,000 meters of the World Cup distances. In the coming season he also wants to focus more on the 1,500 meters. “Because I rode a lot of 1,000 meters last season, I didn’t get much of a chance to ride a 1,500 meter. It would be great if I could ride all major competitions at both distances next year.”
