Joëlle Ferricelli, the nurse who died of Covid-19, was posthumously decorated with the Legion of Honor

Bastia hospital nurse Joëlle Ferricelli, who died of Covid on November 2, was posthumously decorated knight of the Legion of Honor during an exceptional promotion, which also includes the director of Bastia hospital and the head of emergencies.

Joëlle Ferricelli was 56 years old when she died of Covid-19 on November 2, 2020. And the death of this nurse from the Bastia hospital, who greeted this “recognized professional, appreciated and very committed in her profession”, had caused a great stir throughout Corsica.

The nurse was honored posthumously with the Legion of Honor on Monday January 1 by decree of the President of the Republic, in an exceptional promotion which includes many representatives of the world of health and other caregivers who died from Covid-19.

63% of the 3,884 people decorated in total on Friday are for their “investment in the fight against the epidemic”, “most of them working in the shadows”, insisted the Grand Chancellery of the Legion of Honor.

Forty caregivers who died of Covid-19 honored in France

Forty people died from Covid-19 “in the performance of their duties” were thus awarded the rank of knight of the Legion of Honor posthumously. Doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, administrative agents or even technical agents working in the various French hospitals.

The death of Joëlle Ferricelli, a nurse for 31 years, had plagued the whole island, which had paid tribute to her in particular at the Assembly of Corsica or the hospital of Bastia. This death was the first related to the Covid-19 of a nursing staff in Corsica.

The director and the emergency chief of the Bastia hospital also decorated

The Director General of Bastia Hospital, Jean-Mathieu Defour, was also honored with the Legion of Honor, as was the Emergency Chief André de Caffarelli, the pharmacist and president of the regional union of health professionals pharmacists of Corsica Christian Filippi or François Pernin, president of the inter-association coordination of the fight against exclusion (CLE) and former hospital practitioner.
