Under the 34-year-old coach, Boston has the best record in the NBA with 42 wins and 17 losses.
The Boston Celtics announced this Thursday the appointment as coach of the team of Joe Mazzulla, who had held the position on a provisional basis since the abrupt suspension of Ime Udoka in September 2022.
Udoka was suspended in September for a year after it emerged that he had had a sexual relationship with a Boston Celtics worker.
Mazzulla, 34, started working for the Celtics in 2016 as an assistant coach for Boston’s G League team. In 2019, he was named an assistant coach for the Celtics.
Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a statement that Mazzulla has “a unique ability to galvanize” those around him and expressed appreciation for the work he has done since taking over the team.
The agreement between Mazzulla and the Celtics also includes a contract extension, although the Boston franchise did not disclose details.
Under Mazzulla’s leadership, the Celtics currently rank first in the NBA with 42 wins and 17 losses.
In addition, Mazzulla has been named coach of Team Giannis this year in the All-Star game that will be played this weekend in the American town of Salt Lake City.
Mazzulla’s appointment as Celtics coach and contract extension virtually guarantees Udoka’s departure from the franchise.
