In 2018 in New Jersey in the USA, Joe DiMeo (24) received third degree burns on 80 percent of his body.
DiMeo suffered the burns after being involved in an accident when he crashed his car, which caught fire after the collision.
He also had to amputate several fingers due to the severe burns.

After the accident, DiMeo underwent 20 reconstructive plastic surgeries and skin grafts. Doctors at New York University Medical Center Langone finally performed the 23-hour face and hand transplant in August 2020.
– I was ready for the transplant when it was offered to me. I didn’t want to live the way I did, DiMeo added New York Post that time.
It took a team of 140 surgeons, nurses and support staff to carry out the ground-breaking operation in August 2020 – which had only been attempted twice before.
Found love
The young boy’s incredible story caught the attention of Jessica Koby (32) from California, who contacted DiMeo on Instagram after hearing about the operation, reports New York Post.
The pair quickly began a long-distance relationship, and after a while, Koby decided to move to New Jersey to be closer to DiMeo.
In recent years, the couple have shared a number of photos with each other on Instagram, either at sporting events, holiday photos, or at home with their dogs.
Koby, who works as a nurse, said she has been impressed by her boyfriend’s strength and optimism in the face of his challenges.
– I love that he is gentle, kind and that he is so brave. “Even with everything he’s been through, he remains so positive,” she previously told Southwest News Service.
In a previous interview with the New York Post, DiMeo has said that he never doubted that he would find love, as he was still the same inside.

– My donor was a 48-year-old victim from Delaware who died two days before my operation, says the 24-year-old to the New York Post.

He says he is incredibly grateful to his donor and the 140 medical professionals who made the incredible operation a success.
– It didn’t feel strange to get the face of someone who was almost twice my age. I was completely ready to start my life again. This is who I am now, he says.
