A year after the entry into force of American restrictions on exports of the most advanced semiconductors to China, Joe Biden’s government is preparing to toughen its measures in the days to come. Last week, the Reuters agency revealedthat the American authorities had warned Beijing of an update of the regulations relating to chips intended for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the machines for producing these electronic components.

On October 7, 2022, the United States implemented a new regulationson exports to China of semiconductors and equipment for their production. They also managed to convince the Japanese and Dutch governments, two central countries in the field, to follow suit. The stated objective is to prevent Chinese production of certain equipment, particularly in the military field. Since then, the American government has identified weaknesses in its measures, which it intends to remedy.
