The results of the US presidential election in the state of Georgia have been officially announced. The vote recount in the southern state hasn’t changed the election results, and that means Democrat Joe Biden Georgia wins. It is the first time since 1992 that a Democrat has won the state, which has sixteen electors.
Georgia Interior Minister Raffensperger has endorsed the election results. Earlier today, he said that “like all Republicans, he is disappointed that our candidate did not win the Georgia electors.” He added “that numbers don’t lie”.
According to the authorities, the recount of the approximately 5 million ballots was necessary because the margin between President Trump and future President Joe Biden was very small.
Another recount?
The outcome of the recount is another setback for President Trump, who insists that the elections at the beginning of this month were not fair. According to the AP news agency, Biden is at 306 electors and Trump at 232. In several states, Trump is trying to legally fight the result. Tonight he will be in the White House talking to the Republican representatives from Michigan. They can appoint their own electors if there is any doubt about the result in their state.
Incidentally, another recount can be made in Georgia. Once the results are confirmed, Trump’s camp can request it, as the difference in the number of votes between Biden and Trump is less than 0.5 percent.
The eyes remain on Georgia because of the battle for the two Senate seats, which has not yet been fought there. A second round of voting will take place in the state in January, after no candidate obtained more than 50 percent of the vote in the election on 3 November. The Democrats must win both seats in Georgia to get a majority in the Senate.
