Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Joe Biden administration is making various efforts to hinder the growth of China’s technology industry. After blocking components and advanced chip manufacturing equipment from the Bamboo Curtain country, the US also restricted electric car components.
In fact, the US has also asked allied countries such as Japan and the Netherlands to impose restrictions on exports of advanced chip manufacturing equipment to China.
Most recently, US officials are reported to be visiting Taiwan to provide an explanation regarding trade restrictions to China. This was revealed by Taiwan’s Minister of Economy, Wang Mei-hua, earlier this week.
“In our opinion, they are [AS] came to Taiwan to explain directly to the company to understand the US point of view. “Direct discussions regarding the details of US export regulations are urgently needed by Taiwanese industry,” he said, quoted by Reuters, Tuesday (5/12/2023).
Taiwan is ‘home’ to one of the largest chip manufacturers in the world, TSMC. Apart from that, there are many other semiconductor companies that also apply trade restrictions to China.
Since last October, the Joe Biden administration has been teasing plans to completely block shipments of advanced AI chips to China. US chip giant Nvidia is trying to get around the rules by designing chips with special specifications for China.
However, Nvidia was immediately sprayed by US Trade Minister Gina Raimondo. In the latest statement, Raimondo asked Nvidia to stop special chips for China and threatened further blocking.
