Joe Biden wants to rejoin on his first day as president …

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden wants to work on an American re-entry into the Paris climate agreement during the first day of his presidency. He announced this via Twitter. The US is officially no longer part of that climate agreement since Wednesday.

Today, the Trump administration has officially left the Paris climate agreement. In exactly 77 days, the Biden administration will rejoin, ”the Democratic presidential candidate wrote on Twitter. The 77 days are a reference to January 20, 2021, the day on which the new term of office of the US president begins.

On June 1, 2017, Republican President Donald Trump announced that his country would withdraw from the climate accord. On November 4, 2019, that decision was also submitted to the UN. Due to a clause in the text, it then took another year before Washington could officially withdraw from the climate agreement.

Biden had already made it clear during his election campaign that in the event of an election victory he would again work on joining the accord.
