In the United States, President Joe Biden assured, on Sunday, “to do everything” his “possible” against violence by firearms and urged Congress for the umpteenth time to “do more” to regulate them, a year day to day after a racist shooting in western New York.
“For the love of God, do something”, urged the Democratic president to elected Congressmen, in an editorial published by the daily “USA Today” in tribute to the ten black people killed by a white supremacist in a Buffalo supermarket .
The US Congress – the only political body capable of acting – remains deaf to its calls, the Republicans, who control the House of Representatives, being fiercely opposed to any development in this direction, and in particular to a ban on assault rifles.
Tighten controls for minors?
“I am doing everything I can to reduce gun violence, but Congress must do more,” wrote President Biden, announcing thirteen “new measures” aimed at “maximizing” the effects of the regulations already in place. In particular, he intends to strengthen background checks for buyers of weapons under the age of 21 or to strengthen the confiscation of weapons from people convicted of domestic violence.
The president has been increasing calls to Congress since two killings that have had a strong impact on the United States. On May 14, 2022, a young white supremacist armed with an assault rifle opened fire in a Buffalo supermarket, killing ten black people and streaming video of the carnage live on the internet.
Ten days after this bloodbath, an 18-year-old young man, also armed with a semi-automatic rifle, opened fire in a school in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers.
21’000 homicides, 26’000 suicides en 2021
In the process, Congress passed a bipartisan law that focused on mental health and school safety. “It’s a good start, but it’s not enough,” responded the Democratic mayor of Buffalo, Byron Brown, deploring that the situation has “worsened” since these tragedies.
With more guns than people, the United States has the highest gun death rate of any developed country, with more than 21,000 homicides and 26,000 suicides in 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
