The president of the United States, Joe Biden, was once again the protagonist of an embarrassing moment that once again calls into question his cognitive abilities, stating that he spoke with an official who died 30 years ago.
As part of his re-election campaign speech, the president claimed to have recently had a meeting with former French President François Mitterrand, who has been dead for more than three decades.
The 81-year-old Democrat was before a crowd in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, when he began to remember a meeting with said European leader during a G7 meeting in the United Kingdom.
“Just after my election, I went to what they call a G7 meeting, with all the NATO leaders, in the south of England. And I sat down and said, ‘America is back.’ And Mitterrand from Germany, I mean from France, looked at me and said…” Biden began before pausing briefly as if to reorganize his thoughts and finish the sentence: “He said ‘Well, how long will you be back?’” he added. .
The mistake went unnoticed by the president, but not by the press, because although the White House later corrected it in the official transcript of the speech, his mental slip had already been made known.
And this is not the first time that the president mentions the late former European president. In November 2022, he told exactly the same story and also got confused when mentioning François Mitterrand.

Biden’s election as president caused controversy from the beginning because he was the oldest in US history. Much has been criticized from the opposition and internationally about whether the veteran president really has the capacity to fulfill his duties.
Last November, the former White House doctor acknowledged that the president’s cognitive abilities are deteriorating rapidly, which has generated concern among the population and ridicule from the political opposition.
The president has been involved in other uncomfortable episodes that fuel criticism about his age, such as when he tried to greet a “non-existent person.” During a lengthy speech at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, at the conclusion of his speech, he extended his hand as if he were greeting someone, but no one was present on stage.
On another occasion, he mistook his four-year-old grandson for his son, and did not recognize his real adult son.
