This is the latest in a series of intensive penalties that the US has imposed on the Asian power for alleged human rights violations.
“Today, I signed the Uighur Forced Labor Prevention Act,” Biden said on Twitter, along with a photo of himself signing the legislative text on his desk in the Oval Office.
“The United States will continue to use every tool at our disposal to ensure supply chains are free from the use of forced labor – including from Xinjiang and other parts of China.” AP, Friday (12/24/2021).

The new law is the latest in a series of U.S. efforts to get tough on China over its alleged widespread and systemic abuse of ethnic and religious minorities in its western region, particularly the Muslim-majority Uighurs in Xinjiang.
This law requires US government agencies to expand their monitoring of the use of forced labor by ethnic Chinese minorities. Most importantly, this law creates the notion that goods originating from Xinjiang are made with forced labour.
Every business entity must prove that forced labour, including by workers transferred from Xinjiang, was not used in the manufacture of its products before being allowed into the US.
The US says China is committing genocide against Uighurs. That includes widespread reports by rights groups and journalists of forced sterilization and large detention camps where many ethnic Uighurs are allegedly forced to work in factories.
